Sunrun, LichtBlick, Edison to collaborate with Tesla on Powerwall energy storage systems

Sunrun Inc. (San Francisco, California, US), a dedicated residential solar photovoltaic (PV) company in the U.S., on May 1st, 2015 announced its collaboration with Tesla Motors, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA, US) to expand access to renewable energy storage systems for homeowners across the country.

As part of the agreement, AEE Solar, a nationwide distributor of solar PV products and a subsidiary of Sunrun will add Tesla's recently announced ”Powerwall” Home Battery to its line of storage offerings sold for use in homes.

LichtBlick/Tesla collaboration to start in Germany

Also on May 1st, the energy and IT company LichtBlick (Hamburg, Germany) announced a global energy collaboration with Tesla to integrate Tesla's new Powerwall Home Batteries into the energy market.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the innovative storage device in the early hours of Friday (CET) in Los Angeles. The Tesla Powerwall is particularly attractive for households, businesses and SMEs that want to optimize the use of their own solar power, LichtBlick emphasizes,

LichtBlick and Tesla will initially start their collaboration in Germany and the companies plan to expand their relationship to the EU, the US, Australia and New Zealand.

LichtBlick’s IT platform will connect Tesla batteries to a powerful storage system

“The new Tesla Powerwall represents a milestone, since powerful, affordable batteries are a key technology in the distributed energy revolution,” said LichtBlick founder and CEO Heiko von Tschischwitz.

“LichtBlick connects decentralized batteries to a powerful storage system. The optimized use of millions of installed batteries, outside of buildings as well, plays a key part in ensuring that decentralized energy shapes our energy supply system.”

Digital power plant in Germany connects thousand decentralized storage units

Using its “SchwarmDirigent” IT platform, the company links decentralized producers and storage systems and connects them to the energy markets. LichtBlick already operates a digital power plant in Germany with over a thousand decentralized units. Once linked to the cluster, Tesla Powerwall will be able to draw excess wind and solar power from the electricity network and then, during calm or cloudy periods, use this electricity in buildings or feed it back into the network. Consumers who integrate their batteries into the cluster will benefit from energy market revenues through LichtBlick, the company emphasizes.

Southern California Edison to implement energy storage projects that feature Tesla Powerpacks too

Furthermore Edison International (Rosemead, CA, U.S.) on the same day announced that it has established commercial agreements with Tesla as part of its launch of a new line of Tesla Energy products. Southern California Edison (SCE), the regulated utility subsidiary of Edison International, and SoCore Energy, a subsidiary of Edison Energy that provides rooftop solar systems, are implementing energy storage projects that feature Tesla Powerpacks.

SCE is working with Tesla on two demonstration projects that can help reduce the cost of battery storage systems for residential and business customers. These demand response demonstration projects will test communication capabilities and explore rebates to customers who allow SCE to manage their battery charging in order to increase the use of renewable energy while ensuring continued grid reliability.
